About the school

Ballet taught from the foundations, by the Vaganova method

La Sylphide works by the Russian method based on the curriculum of the Vaganova Academy in Saint Petersburg: flexibility, stamina, discipline and strength, but above all attention to detail. With a solid classical foundation, students later pick up modern dance, jazz ballet and anything else they are drawn to with ease.

  • Founded in 1991 by Dobrila Novkov, ballerina and soloist of the Serbian National Theatre Ballet, head of the Ballet in two seasons, trained as a teacher at the Vaganova Academy in 1973.
  • More than a thousand students in 35 years; some went on to secondary ballet education or became professional dancers.
  • A gala performance at the end of every school year in which all students of the season take the stage: 25 productions so far, among them Cinderella, Coppélia, Les Sylphides, The Nutcracker and Cadet Ball.
Good to know

Before your first class

Do I need any experience to join an adult group?

No. The beginners groups start from zero: posture, breathing, the first positions and simple exercises at the barre. Nobody expects you to know anything yet.

Is it too late to start ballet as an adult?

It is not. The beginners groups are for adults of any age and any build. Work is gradual and everyone progresses from where they are.

From what age can a child start?

From three or four. The youngest group works on walking, coordination and movement through play and music; classical ballet proper starts at five.

What should I wear to the first class?

Comfortable, close-fitting clothes you can move in, and socks or soft ballet shoes. You do not need to buy anything special before the first visit.

Which languages are spoken in class?

Classes are held in Serbian. Ballet terminology is French everywhere in the world, so the barre sounds the same in Novi Sad as anywhere else. Write to us in English if that is easier for you.
